Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina is governed by a Board of Trustees of up to 50 members comprised of citizens from all across North Carolina.  The Board meets quarterly to formulate policy and address agency issues.

Tom Simmons installed as 2010-2012 Board Chairman

Former Boys and Girls Homes resident Tom Simmons (right) receives the gavel from Immediate Past Chairman Jim Hill at the Saturday, October 16 Board of Trustees meeting.  Simmons, came to the Homes as a resident in 1956.  He graduated from Hallsboro High School while living at the Homes, and went on to college earning a BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  He became certified as and worked as a teacher, coach,  and social worker.  Simmons enrolled in the Masters in Administration program at USC-Columbia and received the MA Ed degree in 1986.  Later he received the ED Sp Sixth Year degree from East Carolina University in 2000.    Simmons rounded out his educational career as a high school principal and doctoral candidate.  He has served as a City Councilman at his home in Boiling Spring Lakes, as president of the Board of the NC Division of Principals and vice-president of the National Principal's Caucus.  He and his wife Janis have two sons and two grandchildren.  Simmons is the second resident of the Homes to be named Board Chairman (Jerry Parrish served as chairman from 2000-2002).   Accepting the gavel and chairmanship he told the trustees that  "I am proud to be selected to serve the children and the board in this very special position.  I promise you that I will not let you down."
